Annual general meeting 2018

Thanking everyone for making IChemE's Annual General Meeting 2018 awesome! site visit (bintulu)

IChemE had the pleasure of  organising a site visit to Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd located at Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu on the 26th of September 2018

 

Sakura Ferroalloys produces high carbon ferro manganese and silico manganese which are essential ingredients in producing carbon, alloy and alloy steel. They are also used widely for de-oxidation as well as refining steel. 

 

Thank you for joining us and making this event successful! Hope everyone got better understanding on manganese manufacturing  process  and insights as a future chemical engineer!

industrial talk

 On the 21st of September, IChemE SC organized an industrial talk, "Chemical Engineers for the 21st Century in Oil and Gas Industry" by Mr Aaron Ko, Curtin Malaysia's Chemical Engineering Alumni. 

Mr Aaron Ko who is currently an engineer in Petronas Carigali was a guest speaker whereby, the talk was more of a  sharing session in which he shared insights on the job scope of a chemical engineer in the upstream division of an oil and gas company as well as the obstacles faced in the industry in the current era of globalization. In addition, some tips and required soft skills for students to thrive in the industry was discussed based on his experiences.

EA Day Semester 2 2018

On 7th and 8th of September 2018, IChemeE participated for Engineers Australia (EA) Day at Curtin Malaysia and our booth set up was  about Acid Gas Removal units! We built a prototype to describe and provide better understanding about the process and usage of acid removal units in industries. 

Some of our members also participated in games and talks as well!

Curtin Carnival 2018

IChemE had the pleasure of serving mouthwatering Mac N' Cheese with a side of chemical drinks on 25th August 2018 for the Curtin Carnival 2018! IChemE  also participated in showcasing chemical engineering related experiments such as purple cabbage PH indicator and chalk chromatography.

Curtin club fair semester 2 2018

Curtin Club Fair Semester 2 2018. IChemE has the pleasure of welcoming new and exisiting members to our family! Thank you for your support! 

IEEE exhibition

IChemE was invited to do showcase on fun chemistry and physics related experiments. The purpose of the events is to generate interest on science and introduce chemical engineering field.


Site Visit to Massimo and Karex (West Malaysia)

It was a 2 days 1 night event held from 4th July 2018 to 5th July 2018. 

The participants visited two different companies which are Massimo by The Italian Baker and Karex Berhad at Kuala Lumpur. The students gained exposure on the food and condom manufacturing industry in Malaysia and it will give them a clearer picture about their future pursue.


Visit to IChemE Malaysia Headquarter (6th July 2018)

On Friday 6th July 2018, our chapter had visited the Malaysia Corporate Office of IChemE in Kuala Lumpur. The visit was led by our president of Curtin Malaysia IChemE student chapter, Harsha Settinayake. The accompanying lecturer and students are Dr Bridgid Chin, Vaniisha Venugopal, Vinod Ghanesh Sivasankar, and Varsha Rihan. Thank you to Mr Mohan Balasingam (Regional Business Development- South East Asia region) and Ms Theresa Lok (Membership Marketing Executive) for hosting a meeting with us. During the meeting, we had discussed on the way forward of our student chapter, engineer chartered application, and also how to create learner society.


FOES Student club showcase

FOES organised a student club showcase on 17th March 2018 in conjunction with Curtin Mini Open Day. This will serve as a membership drive session to capture new members from engineering first year student and new Curtin students.

 


IChemE Talk by Regional Manager (Membership Talk)

This is an IChemE membership talk by Mr Mohan Balasingam, the regional manager of South East Asia IChemE whichwas held on 23rd March 2018 from 10 am to 12pm in Council Room. In conjunction with this event, we will also be having Mr Zen Teng, the business development of IMechE to give the membership talk on behalf of IMechE.


Hysys workshop

This HYSYS workshop focused on the teaching of basic level and advance level of the HYSYS program. Chemical engineering students explore this program in most of their tutorial classes, for assignments and during their Final Year Project (FYP).The skills learnt can also be applied in academics, when working or during the student’s internship period. The purpose of this workshop is to give introduction to first and second year engineering student , and also provide advanced knowlegde for third and final year engineering students. The speakers are Dr. Wendy Ng Pei Qin and Dr.Zeinab Abbas Jawad.


IChemE Days

The competition strived to instill fundamental knowledge, innovative ideas, critical thinking ability and soft skills. IChemE Days 2018 serves to uncover the top and brightest students in Curtin Malaysia to select them to participate in the year end annual NACES 2018 competition.There is a total of 4 competitions that was organized, which are technical essay writing, power plant design report, powerpoint presentation and video presentation.


Uni-Battle Fund Raising Event

This event was a water shooting game event.Other than that, there was some mini game in pre-event hall for the participants to play while waiting for their turn.


Process Safety Talk by SynergenOG

 SynergenOG gave an industrial talk for the engineering students of Curtin University Malaysia on 4th May 2018 (Friday). The talk with a topic of “Introduction to Safety Engineering in Oil & Gas Industry” was given by the speakers, which exposed the students on Process Safety field specifically in O&G industry. Besides, the company did accept resumes/CV for students who are interested to join the company as fresh graduates or interns.


Welcoming Party semester one

The Welcoming Party of Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter as an introduction of this club and entertainment event.The Welcoming Party is open to all Curtin University students. There will be ice-breaking, game session, photography session, introduction of Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter and introduction to IChemE Global Organization.

Engagement Session with IChemE & IMechE SEA Representatives

On Friday November 24th 2017, CM IChemE Student Chapter had the honor to host a joint meeting session with representatives from IChemE and IMechE SEA Regional Office. The session was attended by 3 student representatives from our chapter and also the faculties from Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. Our guests of honor were Mr Mohan Balasingam (IChemE Regional Manager - South East Asia) and Mr Teng Quan Zen (IMechE Business Development Manager - South East Asia). 


CM icheme 2018 committee inaugural lunch meeting

The newly elected committee board of CM IChemE Student Chapter had its first induction meeting on 11th November 2017 at Pizza Hut Permy. It was great to see all the members so passionate and bonding well with one another. A lot of brilliant and fresh ideas were also discussed. Good food, great ideas, and even better company! Look forward to great things from us in 2018!


Curtin Malaysia Institution of Chemical Engineers Student Chapter aims to achieve better status and recognition in order to better benefit Chemical Engineering students beyond academics by taking a strong initiative in reaching out to nearby relevant industries, educating community, organizing insightful workshop, talk and exciting science events.

IChemE Days

IChemE Days was an internal NACES competition organized by Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter! We organized this competition to give Curtin students a platform to showcase their skills and ideas! There were few categories which were process plant design, technical video, case studey, debate, power point presentation and technical essay.

ICHEME CAR

IChemE Car Competition 2017 was held on 3rd of October 2017.This competition has been an annual competition in Malaysia and hosted as National IChemE car competition by public and private universities in Malaysia. This was an internal competition for Curtin students to experience the competition.

Outreach Programme

The outreach program was conducted in Kampung Lembah Hijau and Curtin University Malaysia by Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter was held on the 20th - 21st of May 2017 for a period of 2 days and 1 night. The event was targeting students from SK Kampung Luak Miri,

Site Visit (West Malaysia)

This was a site visit event proposal which would be held at Setapak Jaya and Petaling Jaya, Selangor Malaysia. Students were visiting Royal Selangor Pewter and Heineken Brewer Plant Tour throughout this (2) days (1) night event.

Site Visit (East Malaysia)

 SOP Bintulu Refinery Complex Site Visit was held on 25th September 2017. This was a site visit arranged at one of Sarawak Oil Palms(SOP) Berhad facilities, a downstream refinery in the palm oil industry. The site is Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad Bintulu Refinery Complex and is located in East Malaysia, the refinery is located in Kidurong, Bintulu which takes approx. 3.5 hours’ to drive by bus from Miri City. 

 

 

Talk on Chemical Engineering. (What is Chemical Engineering?)

“What is Chemical Engineering About?” was a talk that equips its audience with the knowledge of what chemical engineering actually is. It emphasized on the scope of chemical engineering and the future prospects that students who pursue this field can expect. The speaker was Mark Julex David Dumau who is a process engineer from Sarawak Shell Berhad.

Technical workshop (Writing and Presentation)

This technical workshop was focusing on the teaching of the basics of technical writing and technical presentation. It was aim to develop the technical writing and presentation skill of the students for their benefits at respective working fields in the future and discover the potential of students to promote the involvement in NACES 2017.

Interview and Resume writing skills

Interview and resume writing skills workshop was held on 26th August 2017. The speaker of this workshop was Dr.Anita and Miss Esther. The event allowed students as immense opportunity for a better insight on the field of Engineering they might be building a career.They were given opportunity to explore to the real application of skills learnt at the university and had developed deeper, wider understanding on how the industry works in real life. 

 

 



Welcoming Party (Sem1 and Sem2)

 Every semester IChemE hosts a welcoming party for the new members. It gives a great opportunity for the newer chapter members to get to now what IChemE is all about, while getting to know the older members, advisers and committee themselves. It’s always great fun, and never a dull moment, with icebreakers and games planned for the participants, and food and beverages.

 


Speed Eater 2.0

“Speed Eater II” was an eating competition organized by Curtin Malaysia Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Student Chapter, succeeding the “Speed Eater” event from last year. This was a sport event in which the participants compete to finish their portion of the food in the shortest amount of time.


Annual general meeting

Annual general meeting was held on 6th of November 2017.All the members were invited to join the meeting to oversee the transition of committee board 2017 to 2018. The meeting was conducted by the committee board of 2017. Best Member award was also being delivered to the winners.

appreciation dinner

Appreciation dinner was held on 11st of November 2017 in Marriot Hotel, Miri, Sarawak. All the committee , advisors as well as the member who was awarded Best Member Award were invited to have  buffet dinner. The purpose of the appreciation dinner is to appreciate the effort paid by all the committee and advisors and also appreciate the support from our members.
